‘We liked working together, so I can see it working,’ Joe tells MTV News of his ‘See No More’ partner.
Joe Jonas was once a curly-haired kid from New Jersey who sang bubblegum pop/rock songs about puppy love with his brothers. Well, he’s grown up a lot since then. He chopped off his hair and, on his first-ever solo album, Fast Life, he’s opening up about falling in and out of love.
And in August, the middle JoBro turns a very grown-up 22. So, what does he have planned for the big day?
“I don’t have any birthday plans yet, actually,” he told MTV News recently. “I don’t even know where we’re going to be because we’re trying to figure out a touring situation right now and it either looks like I’m going on my tour, my own tour, or opening up for somebody, supporting somebody on tour.”
While his plans are still to be determined, he was sure of one thing: “Wherever I am, there will be a party and it will be fun.”
Speaking of tours, Joe was once rumored to be hitting the road with Britney Spears on her now all-female Femme Fatale trek. Those plans didn’t pan out, of course, and now he’s looking to hook up with someone else on the road. Joe even shared his dream tourmate with us.
“My dream list, wow … I mean, doing a tour with Chris would be cool,” he said of Chris Brown, who helped the singer pen his first single, “See No More.” “I feel like, musically, we both have the same sounds and we liked working together, so I can see it working.”
Joe’s album drops in September, and he told us that he’s not holding back on it. “It was scary in the beginning,” he said of doing a solo LP, “just because I knew this is my one opportunity to show people my journal: the good and bad of every relationship I’ve been in, you know, [and] what I look for [in relationships],” he explained.
‘This is my one opportunity to show people my journal,’ the JoBro tells MTV News after his Paper mag concert in NYC.
BROOKLYN, New York — Like his younger brother, Nick, before him, Joe Jonas is gearing up to release a solo album after achieving success as a group. Without Nick and older brother Kevin by his side, Joe says it was a bit overwhelming at first.
But the 21-year-old, who will release Fast Life in September, eventually realized that he could count on the support of his fans, who would get to see a new side of him with this solo album.
“It was scary in the beginning just because I knew this is my one opportunity to show people my journal: the good and bad of every relationship I’ve been in, you know, [and] what I look for [in relationships],” Joe told MTV News backstage on Wednesday at the Sounds Like Paper Concert at the House of Vans in Brooklyn, New York. The singer was celebrating his Paper magazine cover and performed four songs, including his Chris Brown-penned single “See No More.”
He also talked about other inspirations for the album, including “being on tour with my brothers, being in a band.” Jonas says his approach was to “almost talk about the fans and my point of view and how I see them.”
The songs on Joe’s upcoming album won’t sound like the ones that made the Jonas Brothers famous, he said. They’re unique to Joe, fusing his love of house music and mainstream pop&B instead of the pop/rock of a JoBros album. “It was really, really cool to have those experiences [from] all my life [and] to be able to write about it and on my own,” he explained. “And also on the music side, it was a fun process. It was almost an evolution process, because in the beginning it sounded nothing like it is now. It was totally different and very singer/songwriter, and I naturally love dance music and urban, hip-hop music, so I wanted to be able to make something new for them to hear.”
Last night (June 6) at the Sounds Like Paper Magazine Party at the House of Vans in Brooklyn, Joe Jonas performed four songs from his upcoming solo debut — his first musical foray since older brother Kevin got married and the Jonas Brothers went on an unofficial hiatus more than a year ago.
Anyone who still thinks of Jonas as the little boy performing with his brothers alongside Demi Lovato in “Camp Rock” is going to be shocked when his album “Fast Life” drops in September. The now 21-year-old former Disney superstar is going solo and growing up, taking his boy band moves to a new, manly level.
Opening with much-hyped but still unreleased “Love Slayer” and closing with his Chris Brown-penned single “See No More,” Jonas performed a short set of pop tunes that had the crowd screaming and dancing along, thanks to their obvious hip-hop and club music influences.
Jonas performed choreographed dance moves alongside two female and two male back-up dancers, as if he had been plucked out of a ’90s boy band music video. And that seems to be what Jonas is going for, following in the footsteps of ‘N SYNC frontman Justin Timberlake as he makes a solo career post-boy band. Jonas is one of the Paper Magazine summer cover stars, and in his interview with the mag, he discussed Timberlake, calling the elder pop star an inspiration.
Two years ago, Jonas’s younger brother Nick started his own solo project, Nick Jonas & the Administration, and now it’s Joe’s turn. Nick sat down last month for a live Q&A with Billboard.com and talked about Joe’s album.
“I think that he’s had a lot for a long tome that he’s wanted to say — some things that he talks about on this record,” said Nick, explaining that he wouldn’t be coming out with new music until his brother had time to shine.
When the album releases this fall, Jonas will have his moment to shine, and fans who grew up with the band will be able to see the young pop star in a new, adult light. He opens up in his new tracks, singing about life in the spotlight and the ups and downs of his relationships.
After Jonas finished his set, he moved to the back of the room, energetically dancing and jumping as fellow Paper Magazine cover boy Swizz Beatz closed the show with a selection of hits and a guest appearance by New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony.
Obviously the answer to that question is Winston, Joe Jonas‘ adorable pooch, who goes everywhere, including the studio, with his equally-as-adorable owner. But aside from doggy poo, Joe has lots to say about his new solo venture, including what it was like collabing with Chris Brown, why he (and the rest of the world) would kill to be on Glee and if the Jonas Brothers are really breaking up. Plus, he dished on what he thinks is “true love!”
Joe Jonas’ Choice Karaoke Song? Anything From ‘Grease’
Filed under: Joe | Posted by: Steffy | July 8th, 2011
Joe Jonas stops to take a pic with a fan after grabbing some coffee at Starbucks in NYC on Tuesday evening (July 5).
The 21-year-old musician caught up with GQ UK recently and dished on what he sings when the mic is in his hand at karaoke.
“Anything from Grease, ‘You’re the one that I want’ is usually the go-to,” Joe shared. “A lot of my friends are singers but there are always a few people who aren’t and they don’t want to embarrass themselves so we flip-flop so that I take the girl part and they take the guy part. It’s really high for me.”
I’ve just added photos of Joe’s appearance and performance at the 2011 Sounds Like PAPER Concert for Paper Magazine at the House of Vans in New York City last night into the gallery.
